June’s Full Moon

In our house we have a monthly tradition: Every full moon we watch a monster movie. Recent selections have ranged from campy classics (“The Blob”), to high budget blockbusters (“I Am Legend”), and from horror (“Alien”), to action (the “Underworld” trilogy), to comedy (“Mars Attacks!”).

This month we’re watching… well, we haven’t decided. We’re open to suggestions. Use the comments below to let me know what monster movie you think we should watch! The only rules are:

  1. It must be available. If we can rent it on DVD, watch it instantly on Netflix, or go to our local movie theater and see it, it’s fair game;
  2. It must center on a monster or monsters. And I mean non-human ones. Yes, Hannibal Lecter and Mel Gibson are horrifying in their own ways, but they’re not what we’re looking for. Former humans (mutants, zombies, vampires, mummies, and werewolves) are, of course, just fine;
  3. It must be a movie. Or at least movie-length. We’re not going to get through a whole season of “True Blood” in one night.
  4. We reserve final decision making authority.

So post your suggestions in the comments below. I’ll let you all know what we decide by Monday, and hopefully some of you can watch along with us in your own homes. I won’t be live blogging it, I’m afraid, since we normally watch these films on my laptop. I will be eating popcorn and thinking of all of you, so join us!

A quick note about comments: I’ve had a large amount of spam. So I have the website set to send all first-time posters to moderation. This means I’ll have to approve comments by hand. After I’ve approved your comment once, any of your future comments should be automatically accepted. Let me know if you have any trouble with this by email.

    Do aliens count as monsters? Because there’s a hopelessly artsy takes itself too seriously movie from the 80s with aliens, the NYC art/music scene, and black light gender bending…Liquid Sky. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085852/ It’s so godawful it’s good.

    Well, if you want a kinda fun, goofy (From what I remember, it’s been years since I’ve seen it.) flick, there’s Critters. My dad and I watched that together a few times when I was inappropriately young to have done so. There were several sequels, too.

    Also in the fun/goofy category–Tremors!

        My Mom and I would stay up watching B-movies on purpose (she detested MST 3000, because she wanted to watch the stupid movies *without* the commentary, thanyouverymuch!) (We also watched other stuff, and if I can remember titles, I’ll give them to you, and let you Google ’em ;-)) A title that came to mind when I popped over to see if there’d been any more recommendations was The Tingler, with Vincent Price (not entirely certain the The is part of the title…) Mom recorded it off of the TV a couple of decades ago, and if the tape still physically existed, I’d mail it to you. Alas, her huge collection was discarded after we lost her.

    Gremlins is always good fun (just don’t get the stupid thing wet!). Also The Nightmare before Christmas is chock full of monsters, though you might want to reserve that for a different season.
